Announcing new Pore Pressure Prediction service.

DownUnder GeoSolutions has added to its diverse pool of experience by adding Pore Pressure Prediction expert, W. Rex Butler, to our team. Rex has more than 30 years industry experience which, when combined with DownUnder GeoSolutions’ existing Petrophysics and Seismic Processing teams, provides the skills to solve even the most challenging overpressure problems for our clients.  When you further combine this team with the products we develop for solving the most complex of oilfield problems, you have an unbeatable combination.

Predicting and quantifying overpressures in drilling targets is of significant value in hydrocarbon exploration.  Value extracted from the safety and cost considerations of drilling as well as having a better understanding of the reservoir quality and fluids.

Overpressure can arise from a number or sources including undercompaction, thermal effects, tectonic stress, clay diagenesis, charging and hydrocarbon generation. To understand the geopressure we begin with analysis of well information which allows us to establish the pressure, porosity and lithology regime at well locations.  We then combine the results from various calculations from well data and calibrate to real pressure information from well pressure tests and drilling event. From this we build an accurate deterministic model of pressures in each well.  Calibration of sonic data from the well to seismic velocity data then provides a means of predicting overpressure away from well control.  This allows us to model overburden, pore and fracture pressures.  The resulting pore pressure cube and target well pressure models allow for better well planning and prediction of overpressure.

Shooting a goal for indigenous sport

The team at DownUnder GeoSolutions is proud that our company plays a vital supportive role in our local community. This year we have enjoyed playing a part in fostering indigenous sport with our sponsorship of two basketball teams comprised mainly of aboriginal girls from remote communities in Western Australia.

The girls all board at the Myera Hostel so that they can attend school in Perth at Clontarf Aboriginal College, Perth Ladies College and Aranmore Catholic College. It’s a long way from their homes and families in places as far spread Nullagine, Port Hedland, Karratha, Kununurra and Meekatharra.

DownUnder GeoSolutions provides registration fees, which cover coaching support and training costs for the U16 Girls and U20 Girls Subiaco Basketball teams.

We were thrilled that both teams achieved great results in 2011. There were more than a few nail-biting games, both teams made the finals, and several girls were invited to join All Stars teams, regional squads and coaching positions. Above all, we're proud that we’re involved in helping to give a group of young Australians a love of sport and sportsmanship that will last a lifetime.

The DownUnder Circus rolls into town!

The Circus came to town at DownUnder GeoSolution's annual crazy Christmas party. Guests were wowed by amazing acts and death defying feats as they enjoyed popcorn, fairy floss, pizza and more!

Company director, Troy Thompson, nearly stole the show with his own handwalking act during Matt Lamont's welcome speech. And everyone's favourite band, Oats Supply, kept the guests dancing until the small hours.

New In DUG Insight 2.4: Geological Cross Sections

Although DUG Insight is well-known for its history as a geophysical tool, some of the many additions in the new version 2.4 are for the geologists.

Foremost among them is the Well Correlation View:

Choosing wells is as simple as picking an arbitrary line. You can then pick markers in any view, which are interactively correlated, honouring user-defined stratigraphic constraints. Choosing from a range of lithological colours and patterns requires just a few clicks.

Each well can have multiple independently-configured tracks for well log display. Toggling between TWT, TVD, and MD -- or flattening to a chosen marker -- are all one-click operations.

It's easy to make great-looking images with DUG Insight 2.4, and of course geological cross sections are included in the free 30-day trial.

The DownUnder team gets active!

Three DownUnder GeoSolutions team members have won the workplace team prize for the City of Subiaco’s Active Team Challenge. Michael Hartley, Chris Kruger and Troy Thompson entered as the DownUnder GeoSolutions Active Team.

The challenge involved leaving the car at home at least two days a week and walking or cycling to work or public transport in an effort to reduce traffic congestion, energy use and greenhouse gas emissions. Participants logged in their journeys and received personal information back about kilojoules burned and money saved.

Michael catches public transport to the Dugeo office, gaining 30 minutes of exercise per day by walking from home to the bus stop. Chris also walks to public transport to get to work. “I always walk and take the train to work after a stint in Europe where it became habit”, he said. “I think it’s good to support public transport and reduce our dependence on motor vehicles”. Troy cycles 13km to work in 40 minutes. During the six week Challenge, Troy burned 83,824 kilojoules, or 243 chocolate biscuits!

The boys were thrilled to win a gift voucher to the Subiaco retailer of their choice.

Our budding geophysicists!

A team of support personnel from DownUnder GeoSolutions’ Perth office were recently plunged into the world of seismic acquisition, interpretation and modelling as they undertook a one day course: “Introduction to the Oil and Gas Industry for Non-Geo’s” conducted by Professor Norm Uren PhD.

The participants all graduated with flying colours and are pictured here proudly displaying their certificates. They all agreed that whilst they enjoyed the course, they would not be rushing to give up their day jobs in the finance, marketing, business development and IT departments!

Prior to his recent retirement, Professor Uren held the position of Professor of Exploration Geophysics at Curtin University. He is responsible for encouraging the careers of our very own company founders, Matt Lamont and Troy Thompson.

A Drag of a Party

Our annual Christmas party held last November was a real drag! There were copious amounts of feathers and flamboyancy with Brazilian drumming and dancing group – Sambalicious.

Throughout the evening guests were served drinks by showgirl hostesses and treated to pizzas of their choice from Nunzio of Il Padrino Mobile Pizza.

The drag queens arrived in style by limo and strutted down the red carpet to the surprise and delight of guests. They performed a five-girl Priscilla Queen of the Desert show, led by ‘Feminine Hygiene’ which involved lavish costume changes – feathers, sequins and size 16 stilettos.

The show made a few people nervous but not Matt Lamont, our charismatic MD who joined them on stage for a short dance until he was escorted off by the girls! Slim Jim and the Phatts followed and had guests dancing the night away.
